Let's Talk: Corona Virus and the Service Industry; IS IT SAFE TO GO OUT TO EAT? WHAT ABOUT SERVERS?

Amid closures of national sports and venue events around the country and the world, what about the people that work at restaurants?

Servers work off of tips as the main part of their income, and with so many closures in the news due to corona virus the question remains:

IS IT SAFE TO GO OUT TO EAT? Also, WHAT ABOUT THE SERVICE INDUSTRY WORKERS THAT CAN'T AFFORD TO TAKE A DAY OFF?

I go over my personal thoughts about this and discuss why I think restaurants are the single most dangerous place in America when talking about community spread of Corona Virus (COVID-19).

I myself have worked off and on for 15 years in the service industry in every position from busser to manager. Bartender and server.

I have a pretty good idea of how the normal restaurant operates, and if not closed it worries me that these venues will be the largest contributors to community spread of COVID-19.

I also know from personal experience most workers in this industry don't have substantial savings to help them pay bills, put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads amid hiked housing costs in many areas.

Meaning, they can't afford to take a day off, let alone 14 days.

What about servers? What are they supposed to do?

Furthermore why is no one talking about the spread of the virus in these establishments? While we buy up toilet paper and hand sanitizer to a point of absolute craziness and close down all large gatherings of people, where is this in the conversation?

If you'd like to see these people taken care of please consider a couple things:

1. Call your governor or congressmen and ask them to consider this in their plans.

2. Buy gift certificates if you want to see your favorite venues stay in business until they can pick back up after the outbreak dies down.

3. Reach out to your friends in the service industry for their thoughts on this topic.
